Active Living - Fun Free Fitness

The Cairns Regional Council has been co-ordinating a pro-active program to encourage our community to have fun, stay active and keep fit. The ‘Active Living - Fun Free Fitness’ program has been operating since 2003, and in this time it has seen huge growth in both the number of participants and also the number of classes available. The 'Active Living - Fun Free Fitness' program incorporates many daily physical activities for both locals and tourists alike. The key to the program's success is the that classes are FREE and that the locations for these classes are stunning!

Classes

The current classes available include:

AQUA AEROBICS

To get fit with us, just add water - Friday & Saturday mornings in the Lagoon is frolicking in the fun, fitness and friendship of aquatic exercise, burn calories without burning up, with about 100 of your best water buddies!

Aquatic exercise is a low impact cardiovascular, strength and endurance activity that will burn calories, improve joint strength and bone density, speed up your weight loss efforts, improve your balance, coordination and confidence to take your new found fitness to any other activity outside the pool too.

Our participants are young and old, able and disabled, athletes and general exercisers all trying to get the most for their health for life.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Want to learn to play beach volleyball, increase your skills, or just want to have a fun hour of sport? Elite coaches Joel Groberg and Luke McDonald lead this weekly clinic, that combines skill training and play, with groupings for all skill levels.  Come on down and bash a ball!

BOOTCAMP

ATTENTION! This class will have you working to your full potential! Don’t let the name fool you -  Boot Camp is the class for everyone, so come along and give it a try! In the true style of Boot Camp, you will be pushed and encouraged to try new and exciting things (even things you thought you  couldn’t do!)  A basic fitness level is advised for this class but is not essential.

Your qualified instructor will be able to deliver you with an awesome workout whatever your fitness level.

BOULDERING

Active Living Climbing sessions with Topknot Climbing Bouldering, a form of rock climbing at low height, evolved through the focus of climbing technique. A minimal amount of equipment is required. No need for harness or ropes. Bouldering is not only a fun safe introduction to rock climbing. Suited to all levels of fitness and climbing experience. Try a different form of exercise and get a great workout

Over the sessions learn and develop skills to solve a range of climbing problems

Like any form of rock climbing, good for the body, mind and soul

If you have climbing shoes, great bring them along - Dunlop volleys are a good alternative and of course sneakers are OK, bring a water bottle and maybe a towel

BOXINFUN

First and foremost a fitness class, Boxinfun incorporates punches, kicks and knees to get you fit and strong - fast. Based around boxing and kickboxing, you will learn how to hit and kick safely and effectively, burn fat and let your cardio fitness reach new heights.

MUMBALATES

This is a perfect workout for every new mum. Mumbalates is fun, energising, playful and best of all you can do it with your baby!

The 45 minute class includes baby play, pelvic floor and ab exercises, energising stretches, and full body strength training.

The atmosphere is relaxed and casual and you can enjoy the workout at your pace. This is a truly unique and different workout that will leave you feeling strong, confident, playful and relaxed.

YOGA

Yoga is beneficial for everyone across all levels of fitness. It’s suitable for those who have not tried yoga before and also challenging for those more familiar with a regular Yoga practice.

The 1hr yoga session combines  5 traditional Yoga elements:  Meditation,  Breathing,  Postures, Relaxation, Philosophy. 

Yoga develops flexibility and strength. The stretching, squeezing and twisting in the postures helps keep internal organs free of toxins and full of oxygenated blood, pumps the lymphatic system and helps to enhance the immune system.

While the breathing delivers oxygen to the cells, it also helps keep the nervous system calm and balanced. Relaxation and meditation techniques are essential to learn how to effectively manage stress, while yoga philosophy helps to put life in a balanced perspective.

ZUMBA

Zumba combines high energy and motivating Latin music with unique moves and combinations that allow the Zumba participants to dance away their worries. It is based on the principle that a workout should be "FUN AND EASY TO DO" allowing Zumba participants to stick to the Zumba Fitness program and achieve long-term health benefits. Zumba is a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both the body and the mind.
