April School Holiday Fun - Free Skateboarding Lessons

Welcome to the world of skateboarding!  Whether seen to be an art form, extreme sport or mode of transportation, skateboarding has come a long way from its original format as an alternative to surfing back in the 1950s.  There is now some 12.5 million skateboarder’s world wide and with the technological advancement of board design - an infinite source of skateable terrain.  However, street scapes & skate facilities provided by councils can be a dangerous place for new comers.  The Skate Method training program has been developed for this reason and to develop the skills of athletes in order to set the standard in skateboarding technique.

Skate Method’s head coach – Adam Walker – in conjunction with the Cairns Regional Council, will be running free clinics at the Cairns Esplanade Skate Park during the April school holidays.  This will be an opportunity for kids interested in learning how to skate to be introduced to the Skate Method technique and have a whole bunch of fun!  Clinics will be available beginning Tuesday, April 8, through until Friday, April 11, and offer a beginners class starting each day at 9am, followed by an advanced class starting each day at 10am. Classes will run for 1 hour each.

Bookings are essential; please telephone Inner City Facilities on 40443715 or email d.campbell@cairns.qld.gov.au to reserve a place.  Closed in footwear and helmets must be worn.  It is preferred for students to have their own skateboard, however equipment can be provided.

Cairns Esplanade – New Years Eve 2007/2008

 Minus Penny

The months of planning proved to be well worth it, when over 30,000 locals and tourists converged on the Cairns Esplanade, for the Cairns City Council’s 2007 New Years Eve celebrations.

Kicking off with the ever popular Bree and the Bopstars kids show, the dance floor came alive with a throng of dancing and singing children.  This highly interactive show had the kids mesmerised, with games, competitions and a crowd favourite….the lolly scramble.

The entertainment program then changed direction to showcase the talent of a number of local wrap and hip hop artists. Jordan Oliver, Dizzy and Carl Fourmile, all performing their own original tracks.

Cairnda Christie and Natalie Bliss, travelled down from the Tablelands to perform on our New Years Eve stage.  With their own unique folk fusion, it didn’t take long to have the crowd up on their feet. The girls performed a number of their own original songs along with a few covers known to all.

Building the momentum like only they know how, Hit Like a Girl played us in to the main fireworks display at 9pm.  Hit Like a Girl were so popular last year, there was no doubt that we needed to bring them back for another performance this year.

Explosive Art consistently surprise and impress with their fabulous fireworks displays.  Just when you thought they couldn’t bring out anymore “ooh’s and ahh’s” from the crowd… they did.  The sky really did come alive and the crowd responded with an explosion of cheering and clapping.

So after too many times on the Barrier Reef Entertainment jumping castle, far too much fairy floss, Hungry Possum pizza and Bopstar lolly scrambles, it was time for most of the kids to take their mum’s and dad’s home.

But the night was not over yet, Koahalition played their hearts out and the crowd responded accordingly.  There wasn’t a spare space on the dance floor.  Clearly loving the crowd participation, Koahalition went on to play through two encores.  What a great ensemble of very talented local musicians.

Minus Penny, what can we say?  These boys know how to rock and they won many new fans with their mix of covers and very intelligent and catchy originals.  New Years Eve centre stage was better than any graduation party for this group of recent St Mary’s graduates.  Getting close to midnight, they proved to a still very strong crowd that they are worthy of all their successes and popularity.  The boys version of Silverchairs’ “Freak” rocked.

The only thing left for another very popular Cairns Esplanade New Years Eve was the midnight fireworks display.  And what a show!!!

Of course a night like this would not be possible without the wonderful support of our sponsors, Sea FM, Defence Jobs and Trinity Auto.  A big thanks also to our wonderful friends at Bright Black AV, the show wouldn’t be possible without them, also Events NQ for their support.   And our wonderful Emcee Mark Littler from Sea FM.

New Years Eve on the Cairns Esplanade is proudly presented by the Cairns City Council.

So thanks for a great night, Happy New Year and see you again next year.
