UMI Arts Indigenous Marketsts Indigenous Markets
Last Friday of each month from May to October, 4-9pm, Cairns Esplanade Lagoon.
(note special additional dates in August for Festival Cairns)
The UMI Arts Indigenous Markets are a 'must see, must do' event in Cairns.
The Markets bring together authentic traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music, dance and story telling, as well as arts, crafts and clothing stalls. The Markets are unique to Cairns and are a celebration of arts and culture from around Far North Queensland.
The UMI Arts Markets happen on the Cairns Esplanade, in the heart of the CBD and adjacent to the popular swimming lagoon and restaurant strip. From 4pm to 9pm locals and visitors alike come together in the relaxed setting of shady trees and grassy lawns, to enjoy, learn about, and share in the celebration of traditional and contemporary Indigenous arts and culture in Far North Queensland.
The Markets feature some of the hottest established and emerging performers from the region, live on the Markets stage! Surrounding the Markets stage area are the Markets stalls, where stall-holders sell a fresh range of jewellery, artworks, craft and artefacts - all original and all hand-made with unique Far North Queensland Indigenous style. Come and purchase authentic, locally-made items directly from those who make them.
On the last Friday of each month (during May to October 2010), gather your family and friends, a comfy rug, and come to our UMI Arts Indigenous Markets for an evening of entertainment, fun and shopping!
